The Lobos earned a split in their first two matches of the soccer season, falling to Northland Prep, but rebounding to defeat Holbrook.

Facing the Spartans in Flagstaff on Aug. 30, Snowflake’s passing was just a little off and Northland was able to take advantage.

The Spartans scored two first half goals to lead at the break. In the second half Snowflake was called for a foul, resulting in a penalty kick, which Northland also scored on to make the final score 4-0.

“It is no secret that our program has struggled on turf fields, which they have. We hope that our second match with them will go more in our favor,” said Lobo Coach Brian Weir.

On Sept. 1 the Lobos played host to Holbrook and flipped the tables on the final outcome, winning this match 4-0. Holbrook held Snowflake without a goal until the 31st minute of the first half, when Fernando Garcia crossed the ball and Fernando Mura put it into the net with a one-touch goal. That same duo combined for the next goal just 15 seconds later after stealing the ball on a Holbrook kick off.

Just seconds before the end of the first half it appeared Holbrook would trim the lead to just one when the Roadrunners’ forward got past the Lobo defense and the goalie, but a late save from Kyle Willis, who came out of nowhere to deflect the shot away from the net, preserved the 2-0 halftime lead.

Early in the second half Ricky Montejano passed a through ball to Fernando Garcia, who then successfully attacked Holbrook’s goalie in a one on one situation, pushing the lead to 3-0. At the midpoint of the second half, Holbrook appeared to be in position for their first goal, but a nice play by goalie Dallin Hastings blocked the shot.

Snowflake’s final goal came from Dustin Shumway, with a nice assist from Landon Godfrey, with just seven minutes left in the match.

“Overall, we performed well. Our passing was better in our second game than our first, and we had more opportunities on goal,” concluded Coach Weir.
