After beginning the season with a solid win over Window Rock, the Lady Roadrunners of Holbrook quickly saw their record balanced at 1-1 after dropping a home contest to Blue Ridge last Wednesday in three games. The Lady Yellowjackets were one of the top teams from the 3A East region last year and will again be a force to be reckoned with in Division III this year.
The Lady Roadrunners seemed a little flat emotionally after the previous night’s win and the Lady Jackets were able to take advantage of too many Holbrook mistakes. The Lady Birds trailed throughout the first two games, losing them 19-25 and 17-25. In the third and final game of the match they started quickly, building a 6-2 lead, but had the tables turn on them before eventually losing the game 15-25.
Holbrook put up some solid statistical numbers in the win over Window Rock, but in this loss the numbers weren’t as convincing. Kellin Bakurza finished with five assists and eight digs. Bethany Baldwin had four kills, three digs and served two aces. Aaren LaRose compiled one kill, 15 digs and one ace. Corazon Alvarado finished with three kills, four digs and an ace. Shandie Demuth and Samantha Smith each had one kill. Maria Garcia finished with one dig. Janecia Nez had three kills and one dig. Tess Baldonado recorded four kills with three digs. Shantina Kinlicheenie had nine assists, five digs and served up one ace.
Holbrook will next play at Joseph City tonight (Sept. 7), then be on the road at Snowflake on Thursday. This weekend they will play in the Coconino Tournament. The Lady Birds’ next home match will be on Tuesday, Sept. 13, when they host Snowflake.
