The Holbrook School District Governing Board met on Tuesday and passed a $21 million budget for the 2011-12 fiscal year. Following a public hearing that went without comment, the board approved the budget, which includes a 3.9 percent increase in the maintenance and operations budget, a 1.2 percent increase in the regular education instruction budget and a 1.3 percent increase in the special education classroom instruction budget.
The unrestricted capital budget will be decreased by 47.4 percent from $1,641,667 in fiscal year 2011 to $864,150 in fiscal year 2012 due to cuts made by the state legislature, and the soft capital allocation budget will be decreased by 59.7 percent from $86,523 to $34,842.
According to Business Manager Gary McDowell, it will be federal funding that will allow the district to continue to provide critical services in spite of state imposed budget cuts. Impact aide that the federal government provides will be key to providing classroom instructional programs and services for overall student social and academic progress, and will also be used to keep local taxes at their current overall level. The funds will also provide critical capital needs like classroom space, safety improvements, textbooks, instructional materials and buses.
