The Arizona Department of Transportation began a project on Thursday (June 9) to repave nine miles of Interstate 40, approximately 20 miles east of Holbrook between Petrified Forest National Park and Pinta Road (mileposts 309-319). The $8.2 million project will include removal of a layer of the existing pavement and applying a new layer of smooth, quiet rubberized asphalt. The project is scheduled for completion in September. Work hours will be 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday. Drivers should expect lane closures of up to three miles on segments of I-40; lane closures June 9-30 and Aug. 16-22 for deck repairs over Dead River Bridge (milepost 316); and intermittent lane and ramp restrictions during repaving of the Petrified Forest and Pinta Road traffic interchanges. Traffic lanes will be narrowed and the speed limit will be reduced to 55 mph through the work zone. ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel. ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
