Stipends for Joseph City School District employees will be paid for the 2010-11 school year, but the total amount to be paid will be discussed at a work session set for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 24.

Board members agreed to pay at least two steps of the stipend pay scale using a stimulus education jobs fund. The district received a total of $129,363 from the fund and must spend the money by September.

Superintendent Robert Klein noted that he is not eligible for stipends from that particular fund and neither are any of his staff members, but there are other funds available to include them in the stipend payment plan.

He noted that there is also funding available to pay a third step in the stipend pay scale. Klein explained that employees would not move up the regular pay scale as a result of the stipend, but the money would help make up for the lack of pay raises for the last several years.

“The EduJobs money, in particular, is an opportunity for the district to catch up on the raises our employees have done without for several years,” he noted.

The board agreed to pay the first two steps, but asked to have a work session to discuss any other payments.

In other action May 10, the board:

* Approved the fiscal year 2011-12 district salary schedule.

* Approved putting out a request for proposals for speech pathology services.

* Tabled review of policies on student activity fees, contract carriers and community use of school facilities.

* Approved rescheduling the next regular meeting to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7, at the district office in Joseph City.
