The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Cougars 1-0 in Show Low on Tuesday. The win improved Winslow’s record to 7-4 for the season.
The key to the victory was magnificent pitching by Johnnie Woods and solid defense. Woods went the full seven innings and gave up no runs on just four hits and four walks. He fanned eight Cougar batters.
Show Low had excellent pitching as well and limited the Bulldogs to just two hits. Fortunately for the Bulldogs, they bunched their hits in the top of the third inning and scored the only run of the game.
Vicenzio Sells led off the top of the third inning with a single, stole second base and scored on a single by his brother, Vittorio Sells. Show Low’s biggest threat came in the bottom of the third when the Cougars got runners to second and third as the result of a leadoff walk, a two-out single and a wild pitch. Woods fanned the Cougar cleanup hitter to end the threat. That was the only time a Cougar reached third base.
Winslow will participate in the Wolves Classic Tournament at Goodyear, which got underway on Thursday and continues through Saturday. The Bulldogs are slated to meet Globe, Show Low, Estrella Foothills and at least one more team to be named later during the tournament. Winslow’s next home game will be at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday against the Holbrook Roadrunners.
