With the winter sports in the books for another season, it’s time for Holbrook fans to head outdoors and take in action on the softball diamond.

The Lady Roadrunner softball program is once again under the tutelage of Michelle Bradley, and the Lady Birds are looking to improve on last season’s 17-18 record, although they will have to do it with a relatively young lineup. Just three seniors are on the roster, including Patricia Gabaldon, Sheriesse Thomas and Cherokee Yellowhair. They will be joined by juniors Erin Aragon, Maria Garcia, Aaren Billie, Reanne Baloo, Toni Craig, Shantina Kinlicheenie, Kellin Bakurza and Janecia Nez. Two freshmen, Alizia Foster and Tess Baldonado, round out the varsity lineup at this point in the season.

Holbrook opened the season on Monday afternoon when Payson came to town for a visit. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Payson, but was moved to Holbrook due to poor field conditions in Payson.

The Lady Longhorns have had more practice with their full squad than Holbrook has and it showed early in the game. Payson scored 10 first inning runs to get early control of the game, then added three more in the second and two final runs in the fourth inning in the 15-0 shutout.

Holbrook managed just two hits against Payson pitching, with Erin Aragon pounding out a double and Tess Baldonado reaching with a single. Aaren Billie, Kellin Bakurza and Cherokee Yellowhair all reached on walks. Billie also was credited with one stolen base. Holbrook left just two runners on base and made only one error.
