The Roadrunners picked up a nice bounce-back win on Friday night with a 24-6 road win against Monument Valley. After getting humbled by St. Johns one week ago, the Birds made the long journey to Kayenta to take on the Mustangs on Friday.
Matthias Montijo set the tone early, scoring from 57 yards out on the second play of the game. His 2-point conversion gave Holbrook the early 8-0 lead.
Coach Agramont called a reverse, executed perfectly when Simeon Shaw scooted in from 69 yards out early in the second period. Montijo’s 2-point conversion extended Holbrook’s lead to 16-0. Jonathan Sample scored on a 9-yard rush in the third, and Manny Rico punched in the 2-point conversion, making the score 24-0.
Darren Justman, returning from a knee injury, completed just one of nine attempts for 57 yards. Sample did most of the work at quarterback, completing 7 of 18 passes for 53 yards, but did have 2 interceptions.
Shaw was the leading receiver with 6 catches totaling 44 yards. Cody Nockideneh had one 57-yard reception. William Kinds had one 9-yard catch.
On the ground, Montijo was a workhorse. He carried 19 times, picking up 162 yards, scoring once. Shaw had two carries for 65 yards with a score. Sample rushed twice for 9 yards with a score. Damien Ohlson carried three times for 8 yards. Rico had 5 yards on two attempts.
The Roadrunner defense was stellar. Gage Jones had 10 quarterback rushes, one sack and two tackles for loss. Nemo Williams had 6 quarterback hurries. Troy Francis had 3 sacks. Baler Reidhead, Montijo, Devin Ambrose and Jones each had one sack. Shaw had two interceptions, and Kinds had one.
This week, Holbrook has a good chance to move to 3-1 when they host a struggling Window Rock team on Friday night. The Scouts were soundly beaten by Pinon 58-6 last week and are now 1-2. It will give Holbrook an early-season chance to see how they stack up with Pinon for homecoming night in a couple of weeks. The Eagles will also be Holbrook’s only obstacle when it comes to another region title before it’s all said and done. Friday’s game kicks off at 7 p.m. at Roadrunner Stadium.
