On Tuesday, Sept. 3, the Holbrook Police Department responded to a report of a bear sighting in the area of Hopi Drive and 3rd Avenue. According to Holbrook Animal Control, the bear was seen running through the neighborhood before taking shelter under a home. Officers safely monitored the situation until Arizona Game and Fish arrived and took over the scene.

This is the second bear sighting within Holbrook city limits in the past week. While there are bears in Arizona, it is uncommon for them to be in or around Holbrook. This was only the second bear in town in 10 years that was reported.

Why are they coming into town? Typically, bears are searching for food or water, especially during dry seasons. As a reminder:

* Do not leave pet food or water outside overnight.

* Secure garbage cans and avoid leaving food waste outdoors.

* Bring pets inside at night for their safety.

There has also been an increase in coyote activity within city limits recently. These animals are also searching for easy food sources and can pose a risk to unattended pets.

If you see wildlife in town, do not approach it. Contact 911 if it is posing a threat.
