The Painted Desert Community Complex National Historic Landmark, which includes the park’s northern visitor center and park headquarters will undergo a major multi-year restoration project starting in September.
The Painted Desert Community Complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005 and subsequently as a National Historic Landmark in 2016, due to both its association with the National Park Service’s Mission 66 program and its prominent representation of modernist architectural work by architects Richard Neutra and Robert Alexander. The restoration project will address deferred maintenance work and correct ongoing structural deficiencies, code and accessibility concerns as well as restore select previously modified historic features.
The visitor center operations and bookstore on the north side of the park will be located at the Painted Desert Inn, 2 miles beyond the park entrance for the duration of the project.
The Painted Desert Community Complex restoration contract, funded from the Great American Outdoors Act through the National Parks and Public Land Legacy Restoration Fund, was awarded on May 27, to Stronghold Engineering, Inc, of Perris, Calif.
