Football Snowflake

The initial 4A power rankings came out last week, and the unbeaten Lobos entered Friday’s football game at Poston Butte ranked in the top spot. Snowflake is now 6-0 thanks to their 31-20 road win over the Broncos on Friday night. Poston Butte was ranked 29th with a 2-4 mark.

Despite the Lobos being the stronger team, they found themselves trailing 12-10 at the half to the 2-4 Broncos. Judd Flake took over the reins of the offense and with the help of his defense Snowflake was able to outscore the Broncos 21-8 in the second half to win the game 31-20.

Flake completed three of his eight passes for just 41 yards but one of those three passes was a 30 yard touchdown to Graham Silverhorn who had another nine yard reception. Merrick Ulberg has one two-yard catch. With the passing offense limited, the Lobos relied on a ground game to get the job done.

Behind their strong offensive line, they piled up 220 yards and three touchdowns. All three scores came on the legs of Kanton Turley who was a workhorse for Snowflake. The senior running back carried 20 times gaining 106 yards, with the three scores. Brenner Green carried eight times, gaining 66 yards. Karter Raban rushed 13 times for 51 total yards. Mason Raban gained 12 yards on four rushes.

Hayyden Nichols led the defensive side of the ball with 21 tackles. Aaden Coor finished with 18 tackles.

This week the Lobos take to the road for their third consecutive road game. They will play at Marcos De Niza on Friday night in Phoenix. The Padres are struggling this year with a 2-3 record, including last week’s 62-7 loss to Verrado. Look for the Lobos to cruise to a 7-0 record with an easy win.

Snowflake should run the table over the final four weeks of the regular season. Their four remaining opponents only have one team ranked inside the top 24 in the 4A rankings and that is Eastmark, who they play in two weeks. The Firebirds are currently ranked No. 24.

Snowflake has a good chance to be the No. 1 seed in the 4A playoffs if they continue as they have been through their final month of the season.
