Holbrook had another strong performance over a struggling region foe on Friday night, sending visiting Greyhills home with a 60-0 loss. Holbrook’s offense ran just 19 plays but scored on eight of those with relative ease against a Knights defense, not all that interested in stopping them.
Holbrook’s first score came from special teams when Simeon Shaw returned the first Knight’s punt 65 yards for a score. Bailer Reidhead booted the PAT and Holbrook was up 7-0 early. Following a blocked punt, Darren Justman found Cody Nockideneh for a short pass and catch pushing the lead to 13-0. Holbrook’s next possession ended with Justman’s best pass of the night. A long completion that found Shaw right in stride and 81 yards later Holbrook was on top 19-0.
The next score was a 14-yard run by Shaw extending the lead to 14-0. A 66-yard catch and run by Matthias Montijo pushed the score to 31-0. That score was followed quickly by another short connection between Justman and Shaw, this time from 26 yards, moving the margin to 38-0.
Christian Lerma hauled in a 15-yard catch and run for a score making it 46-0. Reidhead’s two punt run on a busted play moved the score to 46-0. Holbrook’s final score of the half came on a 36-yard connection from Justman to Daniel John, giving Holbrook a 53-0 halftime lead.
Holbrook’s only score in a quick-moving second half came on a short run by Auggie Saiz, making the final score 60-0.
Justman finished the night completing 13 of 16 passes for 352 yards with seven touchdowns. Those seven scores went to six different receivers as Holbrook had their choice of wide-open receivers on nearly every play. Holbrook only ran the ball seven times in the game. Montijo carried twice for 53 yards. Manny Rico rushed twice for 26 yards. Saiz carried twice for 21 yards with a score. Devin Ambrose had one rush for 14 yards.
Shaw had three total catches for 80 yards with two scores. Johns caught 3 for 71 with a score. Lerma caught 3 for 47 with a score. Nockideneh had one TWO-yard catch and score. William Kinds had one 81-yard catch and run for a score. Montijio had two receptions finding the end zone once.
In total Holbrook finished with 466 yards of total offense.
Lerma led the defensive unit with 10 tackles. Ambrose had 8, as did Riku Sakura. Justman had one interception. He also recovered a Greyhills fumble as did John.
With the win, Holbrook evened their season record at 3-3. They were ranked 33rd in the initial 2A rankings and will more than likely need to win their remaining four games in order to qualify for the postseason as the Little Colorado Region Champion. Three of those next four games should look very similar to the game with Greyhills. This week Holbrook travels to Hopi to face a Bruin team that is only 1-5 and coming off a loss to Sanders.
