Soccer 3

For a soccer game, anytime two teams combine for 14 goals, that is considered a high-scoring event. Holbrook and Northland Prep were involved in the offensive shoot-out on Friday evening at Roadrunner Stadium.

Tildyn Larson scored the first goal eight minutes into the first half. Everett Pack gave Holbrook a 2-0 lead two minutes later. The Spartans battled back, tying the score in the next eight minutes with two goals of their own. Everett Pack broke the tie at the 27-minute mark of the half. Northland Prep came back with two quick goals and led 4-3 at the half.

Three minutes into the second half the visitors extended their lead to 6-3. Holbrook fought back with goals by Larson and Carlos Nevarez, but the team couldn’t quite catch the Spartans who eventually won the high-scoring affair 8 to 6.

Holbrook, now 1-4 will host Round Valley today (Wednesday) at 4 p.m. The Lady Roadrunners will follow that match at 6 p.m. vs. the Elks. On Thursday the boys’ team returns to their home turf to host Blue Ridge.

Next Tuesday and Wednesday they will be on the road for trips to St. Johns and Snowflake.

The Lady Roadrunners played just once last week, falling to Payson at home by a final of 15-0. Holbrook’s team is young and inexperienced and both those factored into the lopsided Longhorn win. The Ladies will have hosted Chino Valley on Monday, then will face Round Valley today (Wednesday) in the nightcap of the doubleheader with the Boys team vs the Elks. Next week they travel to Snowflake and then will compete in the Chino Cup Girls tournament on Oct. 4 and 5. The Lady Roadrunners are 0-2 thus far this season.
