This month The Tribune celebrates 115 years of service to Central Navajo County. This is quite a feat considering more than a third of local newspapers closed their doors in the U.S. since 2005. In comparison to 115 years, I’ve only been with The Tribune for a very short while, just over 17 years. But during my time I’ve had the privilege to write about your lives and the choices you make for your communities. You all have a story to tell, whether it’s because you’re an elected official, opened a business, volunteered, played sports, paved a road, packed a food box or hosted an event, you have done something newsworthy and important in your community and you’ve allowed us to write about it. The meeting coverage, police reports and regional news, that’s all important because without it we won’t know what we need to know about our region, what our future looks like and how we can shape it, and the agencies that govern us would no longer be kept in check.

But really, The Tribune has been here for 115 years not because of my efforts or the many, many reporters, editors, publishers and owners serving now or before me, it’s because of you and the support and the stories you provide. You have shown that democracy matters in your town and what you have in your community matters. Thank you for making us a part of your past and your future.
