The Lady Lobos split two region games last week with a lopsided 59-24 road win over Winslow on Tuesday, followed by a four-point home court loss to Payson on Friday night.
Their first meeting with Winslow before the holiday break was a 55-23 win, and this week’s was almost identical, with Snowflake prevailing over Winslow 59-24. The Bulldogs are a different team without their star player Jaci Gonnie in the lineup.
The Lobos had extended their win streak to 10 games with the Winslow win. However, on Friday night that streak came to an end. Payson came to town and left with a 4-point win. The game started well enough, with Snowflake opening up a 12-point lead early, but the Longhorns battled back eventually taking a 6-point lead into the fourth quarter. Payson hung on down the stretch to stun the Lobos 41-37 in a physical contest.
Snowflake entered Friday’s game ranked third in the 3A power point rankings with a 6-2 regular season record. This week, the Lobos will find out how they stack up against the top 3A teams. They travel to second-ranked Window Rock on Wednesday, then make a shorter trip on Friday to take on top-ranked Show Low. By the end of the week, they will know where they stand in terms of the upper echelon of the 3A teams. The Lobos are 13-4 overall heading into this week.
