Holbrook came up 2 points short in overtime on Tuesday night, in a 48-46 loss to visiting Chinle. The game was close throughout with neither team building more than a 5-point lead throughout the contest. Holbrook made just one field goal in the first quarter and only four total field goals in the first half, but still led by one at the break at 22-21, thanks to multiple trips to the charity stripe. The ladies made seven of eight free throws in the first quarter then hit five of 19 charities in the second. Raelle Yazzie led Holbrook at the half with 9 points. “We were actually fairly fortunate to be leading at the half. I felt they outplayed us a little, and we had a tough time making shots. We did get to the line where we shot well. Also, they missed nine free throws in the first half which really could have put us in a hole,” stated Coach Greg Perkins. In the third, each team continued to struggle to find the mark, with Holbrook holding a 2-point lead going into the fourth. Deya Guerrero hit a 3 and Noheah Aberle netted 4 in the period, keeping Holbrook on top. The fourth period saw both teams heat up. Raelle Yazzie netted 5, including a game tying 3-pointer with 8 seconds left on the clock. Alayna Yazzie also scored 5 in the frame. Guerrero and Aberle each had field goals. Chinle scored 16 in the period, sending the game to overtime. In the extra four-minute session, Holbrook managed just one field goal as did Chinle. The difference came from two free throws by the Wildcats. “Last season we started 0-5, which really put us in a hole as far as power points are concerned and we spent the whole season trying to climb out. This year we are playing more competitive games, but we can’t afford to have another 0-5 start. Nothing easy on our schedule, but we have to keep improving,” noted Perkins. Raelle Yazzie led Holbrook in scoring with 16 points. Noheah Aberle added 9; Guerrero, 7; Alayna Yazzie, 5; Bailey Williams, 5; Maya Francisco, 2; and Holly Casamero helped with 2. Holbrook made four treys and converted 16 of 23 free throws. Chinle also hit four treys and made good on 8 of 19 charity tosses. Holbrook falls to 0-2 to start the season. After hosting Ganado on Tuesday, they will compete in the Round Valley Tournament beginning with pool games vs Pima and Fort Thomas. Bracket play on Friday will begin with St. Michaels. Following the three-day tournament, the Lady Birds will host Tuba City on Monday.
