Snowflake suffered their first loss of the season when they played at Valley Christian on Sept. 5. Since that loss, they put together 14 consecutive regular season wins before meeting up with the Trojans in the title game on Friday afternoon.

Valley Christian was the top seed in the 3A tournament, and the Lobos were the second seed. By the time the championship match was over Snowflake had won their second consecutive state championship.

Snowflake earned their trip to the title match on Tuesday with a straightsets win over third-ranked Monument Valley. Facing the Mustangs in Winslow, (thanks to AIA moving the game out of the Valley to accommodate both schools), in front of around 1,500 fans the Lobos won all three sets.

The first set was close, with both teams having the lead before the Lobos prevailed 25-18. In the second set, Snowflake had a huge lead but the Mustangs caught them and briefly took over the lead. Snowflake battled back to win it 25- 22. It was only in the third set where Snowflake dominated, winning game three and the match 25-16 to advance to the title match.

Playing at Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Friday afternoon Snowflake started quickly, building a seven-point lead in the first set before the Trojans battled back taking the lead. The Lobos bounced back and closed out the first set with a 25-21 win, marking the first time the Trojans had trailed to anyone during the playoffs.

Valley Christian took the lead early in the second set and held onto it throughout, tying the match at 1-1 with a 25-16 win.

The third set went back and forth early with each team scoring points. Midway through game three Snowflake’s defense at the net was stellar, shutting down Valley Christian hitters. The Lobos used that defense to win game three 25-16.

The fourth game saw the Lobos take the lead early, building a six-point lead late in the set before the top-seeded Trojans battled back. Their comeback was too late. Snowflake went on to win game four 25-22 and their second consecutive 3A State Championship.

The Lobos conclude the season with an overall record of 33-10 including all tournament matches. Valley Christian had a similar record finishing with a 31-9 mark. The Trojans had just one senior and Snowflake is a volleyball machine so both programs may well meet again in this same title match-up next year.
