Two collisions were investigated by Holbrook police officers during the period of May 31 – June 6, according to dispatcher reports. At approximately 2:22 p.m. on Sunday, June 4, a two-vehicle collision with injuries occurred in the block of Navajo Blvd. The vehicles involved were a gray Toyota truck, driven by Jerry Stewart, 67, of Smithville, Mo., and a Kawasaki motorcycle driven by Angelito Padilla, 23, of Holbrook. According to the report, Stewart was traveling south on Navajo Blvd. when he pulled to the right in the 1000 block near Dairy Queen, waited for traffic to clear and then began to slowly make a U-turn to travel north on Navajo Blvd. Stewart noted that he saw Padilla traveling south on Navajo Blvd. but that he perceived him to be far enough in the distance in order for him to make the turn without interference. While making the turn, Padilla struck the drivers side of the truck head-on and was ejected from the motorcycle. It was noted that there were no skid marks on the road prior to the motorcycle striking the vehicle. Padilla was not wearing a helmet and sustained extensive head injuries as well as injuries to his legs. He was transported by ambulance to a life flight helicopter for treatment in either Flagstaff or Phoenix. He was listed in critical condition. There were no citations issued. At 12:05 p.m. on Monday, June 5, a two vehicle, non-injury collision occurred at the intersection of East Hopi Drive and Second Street. The vehicles involved were a white Kia Sportage driven by Annette Zalenski, 57, of Holbrook and a gray Nissan Rogue driven by Frances Gurule, 84, of Holbrook. According to the report, Zalenski was traveling west on East Hopi Drive and as she approached the Second Street intersection Gurule, who was traveling south on Second Street, ran the stop sign and struck the Kia. Gurule was cited for failure to yield from a stop sign.
