The Wildcats turned the ball over the first five times they had it on Friday night and second-ranked and unbeaten Williams made them pay the price. The Vikings have held five of their six opponents to one score or less and with Joseph City’s help on Friday night, they blanked the Wildcats 48-0.
Joseph City’s early turnovers led to 34 first-quarter points by the Vikings. They added eight in the second and six in the third for the final margin of 48-0.
In 1A football only 12 teams make the postseason. Joseph City was ranked in that 12th position prior to the Williams loss. If they want to advance to the state bracket, they may need to win their final two games. The first of those will be this Friday when they host Fredonia. The Lynx are just 1-4 on the season and ranked well below the Wildcats. With an expected Joseph City’s postseason fate may come down to their yearly rivalry game with Mogollon in two weeks. The Mustangs are currently ranked fifth but have lost twice this year, which is new for the two-time defending 1A state champion who went unbeaten over the last two seasons.
Joseph City is currently 4-2 on the season.
