The Roadrunners have a good boys soccer team this year. They have battled tough and played better than their 2-5-1 regular season record would indicate.
The Birds did drop two regular season matches played last week, losing 2-3 to Camp Verde in overtime on Tuesday. Holbrook certainly had their chances to win this game, they just couldn’t find the back of the net at crucial times in the match. Playing in Show Low on Thursday night they didn’t find the net at all in a 0-6 shut-out loss to the Cougars in Show Low.
Over the weekend Holbrook was in Tucson competing in the Old Pueblo Classic. They ended up with a pair of ties on Friday. Finishing 1-1 vs St. Augustine, then battling to a 2-2 tie with Madison Highland later that evening.
Early Saturday morning they fell 1-2 vs Desert Christian. Holbrook bounced back later that afternoon with a 6-1 win over Patagonia Union.
This week they will host St. Michael in a 4 p.m. game on Wednesday afternoon. Next Wednesday they host Round Valley.
Holbrook is ranked 15th in the power points and needs to perhaps win all four of their remaining matches to qualify for postseason play. The top eight teams in boys soccer advance to bracket play.
The Lady Roadrunners are battling for one of the top six available playoff spots, but like the boys team, they will probably need to win each of their four remaining games to have a chance. Holbrook is 2-6 on the season and ranked ninth. Only the top six make the postseason. Last week the Ladies won at Camp Verde by a final of 3-2. Hosting Snowflake on Thursday they were tied with the Lobos 2-2 before Snowflake closed them out with six straight goals to win 8-2.
This week Holbrook will host Show Low on Tuesday then travel to Page on Saturday. That will leave them with just two matches left in the season.
