The Holbrook Unified School District No. 3 Governing Board met last Tuesday and received a report from Melicia Thompson and Cheryl Carlson on the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Summer Institute, which approximately 25 teachers attended in early July in San Antonio, Texas.

“Some of the take aways that we came home with are the importance of building relationships with our students along with establishing schoolwide goals,” stated Thompson, If we have shared practices within our classroom, students will know these shared expectations which will help them be more successful academically and in their postsecondary pursuits.”

Thompson further explained that when educators connect their students with colleagues as well as students with their peers, learning and confidence improve.

Carlson added that AVID can be applied to the entire school but is specifically targeted to a particular set of private elective classes. “We have four sets of like 12 or 13 students that are good students, but they might need a little bit of extra help to be successful once they get to college.”

Those who attended the AVID Summer Institute also learned about WICOR, which according to Thompson is a learning model which stands for “writing, inquiry, corporation, organization, and reading”. Thompson explained the importance to be organized high school-wide, so students know what that looks like. She added that AVID students are four times more likely to graduate college than students who do not participate in AVID.

“This will be the first year for Holbrook High School to implement the AVID program,” stated Superintendent Dr. Robbie Koerperich. He further explained that one level is an AVID school, where the principles are implemented throughout the campus, then there is second level within that where students become AVID students and take the elective classes. “So, you have AVID school-wide, and you have AVID elective. Not everybody will take an AVID elective class, it’ll be targeted towards certain students that qualify or are chosen for that particular program.”
