Hosting Winslow on Friday night the Lady Roadrunners dropped their first regular-season game of the season. Both teams came into the game on the heels of COVID shut downs and the game showed. It took over five minutes of the first quarter before either team was able to score. Winslow eventually led 9-3 at the end of the first eight minutes. The Bulldogs opened up a 10-point half time lead before pulling away for a 58-37 win over a Holbrook team weakened by COVID protocols. The Roadrunners were the top ranked team in 3A, but without their full roster they just weren’t able to keep up with what will most likely be the new top team Winslow who entered the game ranked fourth. The talented Bulldogs will be a tough team to remove from that top spot. Holbrook was led by Shan Footracer’s 12 points. Noheah Aberle added 10; Raelle Yazzie had 7; Sara Billy, 4; and Abigayle Nez, Deya Guerrero and Nikol Gombos each had two. Holbrook shot just 33% from the field and struggled taking care of the ball with 28 turnovers. Winslow hit 45% of their buckets and had only eight turnovers. The Bulldogs had three players in double figures. Jaci Gonnie had 13; Anysa Tso, 12; and Shaelene Singer added 11. With the loss, Holbrook drops to 7-1 and 15-3 overall. They will still be missing multiple players for all three games played this week. After hosting Snowflake on Tuesday, they will travel to Blue Ridge on Wednesday, then welcome in Payson on Friday. Coach Greg Perkins stated, “We are in a tough spot right now. However, in this program we expect players to be able to step up to the challenge. I think this extra playing time for our younger role players will help us when it comes to state tournament time.”
