The Lady Roadrunners are off to a 2-0 start to the season after road wins over Alchesay and Chinle last week. Holbrook opened their season in Whiteriver on Tuesday last week and started slowly. The Lady Falcons built a 19-7 lead after eight minutes. Holbrook trailed by as many as 19 early in the second before Abigayle Nez and Terry Nez sparked a Holbrook run late in the second half, trimming Alchesay’s lead to six at the half. The third period was a repeat of the first with Alchesay again building a double-digit lead. Holbrook netted just eight in the period and trailed by 10 heading into the final eight minutes. Holbrook battled back and played well in the final four minutes of the game. They clamped down on defense and heated up from distance making four three-point field goals down the stretch to overtake the home team and leave with a 54-49 win. “We know we can’t fall behind like that and expect to win games. The girls did a good job of fighting back but we need to play four full quarters, not just four good minutes. Our schedule is too tough,” noted Coach Greg Perkins. Talynn Spencer led Holbrook in scoring with 16. Abigayle Nez added 14. Freshman Deya Guerrero came off the bench and sparked Holbrook’s offense with 10 in the second half. Terry Nez added 7; Sam Billie, 3; and Nikol Gombos and Noheah Aberle each helped with two. Holbrook traveled to Chinle on Saturday night for a match up in the Den with the Lady Wildcats. This game was a defensive battle throughout. The Lady Roadrunners held Chinle to just 15 points in the first half and led by ten points. Spencer scored eight in the first half and Aberle added six in the half. Chinle outscored Holbrook by just one in the third. In the fourth, both teams netted 11, leaving Holbrook with a 10-point 44-34 road win. “I thought we did a great job containing their post player Aisha Ashley. She is very good and Noheah played well defensively against her. We aren’t a team that is going to score a lot of points this year, so our defense will have to be key for us. This game was an improvement from our first game and we are just looking to improve each time out,” said Perkins. Spencer again led Holbrook in scoring with 14. Aberle added 11; Abigayle Nez, 9; Terry Nez, 7; Raelle Yazzie, 2; and Sam Billie had 2. Holbrook will have hosted Ganado on Tuesday, then will play in the Round Valley Roundball Tournament Thursday through Friday. Holbrook will face Bradshaw Mountain and Leading Edge Academy on Thursday. On Friday they will open bracket play against Safford.
