By Greg Perkins The Lady Roadrunner soccer team has struggled to find the net in the past two soccer matches played last week. Hosting powerhouse Northland Prep last week on Tuesday the Lady Birds played hard but failed to get many shot attempts against the Spartans. Northland Prep turned a 6-0 halftime lead into an 8-0 mercy-rule win in the second half. On Saturday evening, Holbrook played host to Payson and through the first half, 50 minutes of the match, both teams were scoreless. Holbrook had multiple shots on goal but none were able to find the mark. Eleven minutes into the second half Payson found the range on a blooper kick from 20 yards out that went just over Holbrook’s goal keeper’s outstretched hands. Ten minutes later the Longhorns scored on a direct free kick, making the lead 2-0. Payson finished the scoring at the midpoint of the second half with a shot from 30 yards out that again went just past the Roadrunner keeper’s hands. Holbrook has just one match this week having hosting Camp Verde on Tuesday of homecoming week. The Lady Roadrunners currently have a regular season match record of 1-2, They are 1-5-1 overall, which includes four matches at the Show Low tournament. Holbrook’s boys’ team went 2-2 at the Show Low tournament held this past weekend. They fell to 5-0 to Snowflake and 4-1 to Show Low on Friday, then bounced back with a 5-3 win over Round Valley and a 6-1 win over Benson on Saturday. Holbrook’s only regular season match last week was an 8-0 shut-out loss to Blue Ridge on Wednesday. This Wednesday they will play at St. Johns. The following day they will host Payson.
