Football Winslow

By Greg Perkins When Marcus Oberriter scored on a short run capping off Holbrook’s opening drive of the game, that 6-0 lead over Winslow may have sent a statement that the Roadrunners were ready for the traditional I-40 rivalry contest with the Bulldogs. Winslow was ready as well and their 55-yard touchdown pass on their opening possession and successful point after kick gave them a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Following two more Winslow touchdowns, Kyle Smith scored on a 12-yard run, making the score 26-12 and gave Holbrook some hope. However, the ensuing kick-off was returned 70 plus yards for another Bulldog score, making the lead 33-12 at the half. Both teams scored once in the third quarter with Holbrook’s coming on an Oberriter short run up the middle. In the fourth, the Roadrunners posted three scores, while Winslow put up two more touchdowns finishing the game with a 54-40 Winslow win. While this game was another Bulldog win in a long list of Winslow wins dating back to the 1990’s, it had a bit of a different feel to it. Holbrook showed the ability to keep up with the Dawgs on offense. Winslow had the bigger bodies, and they were able to match Holbrook’s speed in the game. They also took advantage of a couple of critical Holbrook turnovers and scored on special teams which resulted in them moving their season mark to 2-0. Oberriter completed seven of 15 passes for 139 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed for 120 yards on 17 attempts. Daniel Montijo gained 70 yards, Izzy Ramos had 48 yards and Smith finished with 24 yards. Ramos was the leading Roadrunner receiver with 79 yards and two touchdowns on his only two catches. Smith had 3 for 37; Chase Sahmie, 1 for 20; and Montijo had one three-yard reception. With 94 total points scored in the game there wasn’t a lot of solid defense by either team. Mauricio Baca led Holbrook in tackles with 7. Freshman Noah Padilla had six tackles. Holbrook will travel to Page on Friday to take on a Sand Devil team that has won just once in three tries. They defeated St. John Paul Catholic school 10-6 two weeks ago but were soundly beaten by Chino Valley last week by a final of 46-0. The long bus ride for Holbrook will be in their favor, but the Roadrunners appear to have the better team this year.
