By Tammy Gray A conditional use permit for two marijuana greenhouses was recommended for approval by the Holbrook Planning and Zoning Commission during a meeting on April 2. The commission also recommended the approval of a conditional use permit for an RV park intended to offer a temporary housing option for commuters. The final approval of the permits will be made by the city council. No public comments were made in opposition to either project. Commission Chairman Mike Sample noted that the only feedback he had received from residents was in support of issuing the permit for the marijuana greenhouses. “Most of the positive comments were related to bringing jobs to town,” he said. According to Sample, the operation is expected to initially create 10 to 20 jobs, but could potentially expand to around 100 new jobs. “Nobody at the meeting objected and it met the conditions so we approved it,” Sample remarked. If approved by the city council, the greenhouses will be located behind the abandoned garage and auto sales lot located on the north side of Aliberto’s in the 1400 block of Navajo Blvd. Each greenhouse will be approximately 100 feet long, and will not be inside the building, but directly behind it. Plans are in the works to improve the appearance of the front of the garage and attached buildings and possibly lease it to an auto dealership. “It’s already commercially zoned, but for the marijuana grow they had to apply for a special use permit,” Sample said. The conditional use permit for the RV park will allow a certain number of occupied RVs to be parked temporarily at 115 West Florida, behind the service station on the corner. It does not allow permanent location of RVs or mobile homes, but would allow individuals assigned work in the Holbrook area to park and stay in their RV. Sample noted that options for temporary workers in the area are limited and the permit would help address that problem. It would also create an option for people who are moving to Holbrook but are having difficulty finding a rental or a home to purchase. Both permits will be placed on a future agenda for the city council to approve or to deny.
