Baseball 3 Winslow

By Greg Perkins Winslow had just two games last week with both matched up against Snowflake in east region play. The first came on Tuesday and was played on the Bulldog diamond. This game was a classic, with Winslow breaking a 4-4 tie with one run in the bottom of the seventh to win the game 5-4. The Dawgs scored once in the first inning to grab the early lead. Snowflake countered with three in the top of the second to lead 3-1. Winslow made it a 3-2 game in the bottom of the fifth, then Winslow retook the lead with two in the home half of the sixth. Trailing 4-3, the Lobos knotted the game with a run in the top of the seventh but Winslow’s seventh inning run gave Snowflake their first loss of the season. Jace LeSueur went 2 for 3; Breven Mattthews was 2 for 4, with two doubles; and Rhett Wengert went 1 for 4 with a triple. Caleb Lyman, Easton Butler, Ryan Caskey, Caden Cantrell and Tristan Cluff each had one hit. Cantrell pitched the complete game. He allowed five runs on nine hits, with two walks and had four strikeouts. Playing in Snowflake two days later the two clubs again battled to a single run decision. This time Snowflake was the winner. The Lobos started quickly, with three in the bottom of the first. Following three scoreless innings by either team, Winslow scored twice in the fifth but the Lobos answered with another run and led 4-2 going into the seventh. The Bulldogs tried to rally but they scored just once before Snowflake shut them down to secure the 4-3 win. Wengert went 3 for 3; Ashton Munger was 2 for 3, with a double; and Cantrell was 1 for 3, with a double. LeSueur, Brefin Matthews and Butler also had hits. Caskey pitched all seven innings to get the win. He gave up three runs on only six hits, with two walks and struck out 8.
