By Greg Perkins The Lady Lobos had their strong season end in the 3A state championship on Saturday afternoon at the hands of the Page Sand Devils. Snowflake took care of Winslow in the semi-final round on Wednesday night in Snowflake outlasting the Bulldogs in a 40-35 final outcome. The foul-marred game was a struggle for both teams with numerous players in foul trouble throughout the contest. Due to all the whistles the game really didn’t have much flow, but the Lobos eventually prevailed by five to advance to the title game. Page came into the game as the top overall seed with an unbeaten record. Snowflake was the No. 2 seed with their only loss coming at the hands of Page earlier in the season. This title game marked the fifth year in a row that Page has been in the final game, having won two of the past three crowns. Snowflake hasn’t been in the championship game in a number of years. Page’s signature man defense set the tone early on forcing the Lobos into numerous turnovers. Snowflake really struggled with Page’s full-court pressure and they had a tough time controlling the Sand Devil point guard Miquedah Taliman in the first quarter. The junior finished the first half with 10 points. Through most of the first half, Snowflake had more turnovers than shot attempts. Trysten Hancock did her part, netting six in the first quarter then added two more before the half. Kamri Ballard and Macee LeSueur combined for 10 first half points. Despite Snowflake having just three girls score in the half they only trailed by two at the break. Page’s defense stepped up again in the third, where they held the Lobos to just five points. Only one of those points came in the first six minutes of the period. Page senior Torrance Begay showed her post prowess in the third, scoring six and helping her team extend the lead to seven with just the fourth period left. In the final quarter Emily Davis netted her first and only two buckets of the game and Ballard added five to her team high nine but the Lobos were forced to put Page on the line where the Sand Devils made just enough free throws down the stretch to hold off Snowflake and win the championship by a final of 36-32. Page completed their unbeaten season with the golden ball. Snowflake had a stellar season as well finishing as the state runner-up with their 18-2 record.
