By Greg Perkins The Lady Lobos matched their counterpart boys’ team with a 15-1 regular season record. In terms of state tournament seeding, they bested the boys by one spot. Snowflake enters the 3A State tournament as the No. 2 overall seed and they come in on the heels of a six-game winning streak. Snowflake won their final regular season game at St. Johns on Tuesday by a final of 49-39. As the number two overall seed, the Lady Lobos will open the 3A state tournament at home on Tuesday evening when they welcome in 15th seeded Sabino. The Sabercats are the defending state champion from last year but with the exodus of nearly all their top players to Prep basketball this season they are just a shell of their former self. Sabino has a 6-6 overall mark and should give little resistance to a solid Lobo team looking for a state title. With an expected Lobo win, they would advance to face either seventh seeded Show Low or No. 10 Globe. More than likely it will be an east region rematch with the Cougars on Friday night in Snowflake. In girls basketball, five of the six east region teams including Snowflake, Holbrook, Winslow, Show Low and Blue Ridge, all landed in the bottom portion of the bracket meaning only one has a chance to reach the title game. It also means the bottom half of the 3A state bracket could look a lot like an east region sectional tournament, although much more is on the line. Higher seeded teams will host the first three rounds of the 3A state tournament this year. If the Lobos win their first two games they will host one of the 3A state semi-final games on March 17. Top seeded Page will likely host the other semi-final round. The 3A state championship game will be played March 20 at East Mark High School in Queen Creek.
