By Greg Perkins Holbrook’s girls wrestling team had two of their three wrestlers place sixth in the girls state wrestling meet held on Friday and Saturday at Mesquite High School. Sierra Aho competed in the 152-pound weight class and placed sixth in her 16-person bracket with an overall tournament record of 3-3. The sophomore won her first match via pin, then dropped her second with a pin. On the consolation side of the bracket, she won her first two matches which positioned her for the fifth and sixth place match. She battled tough but dropped a 2-0 decision to finish up with sixth place. Junior Samara Kennedy also placed sixth. Competing in the 160-pound weight class along with nine other wrestlers, Kennedy won her first two matches by fall, then dropped her quarterfinal match placing her into the consolation bracket where she dropped her fourth match by pin. She then came within one point of winning the fifth place match finishing on the wrong side of a 4-5 final decision. Senior Sharadee Sands also competed in the state meet in the 138-pound weight class. Sands went 3-2 in her 22-person bracket, but a third-round loss placed her just outside of medal contention. Holbrook’s boys’ wrestlers will compete in the Division IV state meet next Tuesday and Wednesday at Poston Butte High School. Without a sectional meet this year due to COVID, all Division IV wrestlers will compete in the state meet next week.
