The Lady Roadrunners finished their brutal five consecutive game stretch early last week with wins on Monday and Wednesday sandwiched around a big loss to Page on Tuesday. Hosting Winslow on Monday, Holbrook jumped out to a 15-7 lead through the first quarter. They extended that to a 32-18 half-time margin. Matehya Aberle scored 14 points in the second period alone helping the Birds build that double-digit cushion. In the second half, Winslow rallied and cut the lead to just four points late before Holbrook closed out the game at the free throw line for the 55-47 win. Aberle led all scorers with 18 points and pulled down 12 boards for her seventh double-double of the year. Abigail Benally netted 9; Jineane Cummings, 6; Talynn Spencer, 6; Mika Joe, Terry Nez and Shan Footracer each had 4; Alyssa Yazzie, 3; and Makani Tsipai helped with one. Hosting top-ranked Page on Tuesday night was a much different outcome. Holbrook looked good against the best team in 3A through the first eight minutes where they held an 11-10 lead going into the second. From that point on Page owned the Birds. The Sand Devils outscored Holbrook 20-2 in the second and never looked back enroute to a 52-26 pounding of third ranked Holbrook. Aberle led the Roadrunners with 10, and Benally had 6. Page had three of their seven seniors score in double figures led by Emma Yazzie’s 14 points. Holbrook put a wrap on the regular season at Payson on Wednesday night. Playing all 13 varsity players on a tight rotation throughout the game, the Lady Birds defeated the Longhorns 59-43. Footracer led Holbrook in scoring with 14 points. Aberle added 12, and Benally finished with 10. Holbrook finished the regular season with an overall record of 12-4. They earned the No. 3 overall seed in the 3A state tournament, which gets underway Tuesday evening at sites of the eight higher seeded teams. Holbrook will host 14th seeded Blue Ridge. Joining the Roadrunners on the bottom half of the bracket are Snowflake (2), Winslow (6), Show Low (7) and Blue Ridge (14). This portion of the bracket will resemble an east region tournament before all is done. While the East region teams battle it out in the bottom of the bracket expect top seeded Page to cruise to the title game in the upper half of the bracket. They will be awaiting the survivor of the bottom portion in the state title game played next Saturday at Eastmark High School in Queen Creek.
