The Lady Roadrunners picked up where they left off prior to their five-day hiatus, winning two more games over the weekend. After not practicing or playing over a five day stretch, the Lady Birds came out and played relatively well with a 43-28 home court win over Show Low on Friday, then after a slow start, they cruised to a lopsided win in Chino Valley on Saturday. Hosting the seventh ranked Cougars on Friday, Holbrook played solid defense through the first half, limiting Show Low to just six first half points. Abigail Benally hit two deep shots, and Jineane Cummings and Mika Joe each added one from distance in the first half helping Holbrook to a 22-6 halftime edge. In the third Matehya Aberle went to work scoring eight in the frame, matching Show Low’s total team output for the quarter. The Cougars outscored Holbrook in the fourth, but the Roadrunner lead was too much to overcome. Aberle led all scorers with 13 points. Benally added 8; Cummings, 7; Joe, 5; Shan Footracer, 4; and Talynn Spencer, Terry Nez and Makani Tsipai each contributed 2 points. Holbrook made four treys and went seven for 12 at the line. Show Low was led by Kyra Brogan’s 9 points. They made one three-point field goal and hit on five of eight free throws. After a long bus ride to Chino Valley on Saturday, the first minute of the game didn’t go well for the Birds. Chino came out quickly hitting two treys and led 8-2 in the first minute of the game. From that point on Holbrook got control of things and led 37-12 at the half. A trio of long-range bombs from Joe, along with additional three-point field goals from Cummings, Benally, Spencer and Nez, along with a workman-like 14 from Aberle who sat out the fourth helped Holbrook to a comfortable 53-18 win. Aberle led the team in scoring with 14; Joe added 11; Spencer, 6; Cummings, 5; Sam Billie, 3; Benally, 3; and Footracer, Raelle Yazzie, and Nez each netted 2. Holbrook finished with eight three-point field goals and went five for eight at the line. Chino was led by senior guard Melissa Soto with 8 points. They finished with two treys, both by Soto, and went two for six at the line. With the two wins, Holbrook improved their season mark to 10-3. After hosting fifth ranked Winslow on Monday, and top ranked Page on Tuesday the Lady Roadrunners will wrap up five straight games and the regular season with a trip to Payson on Wednesday. Holbrook is expected to be a top eight seed when the 3A bracket is released on Saturday morning, meaning they will host at least one state tournament game on Tuesday of next week. With the higher seeded teams hosting the first three rounds including the state semi-final rounds getting a high seed is vitally important.
