By Linda Kor A hard-working group of volunteers showed up to remove old tires that were wedged along the Blue Heron Lake at the Hidden Cove Golf Course in Holbrook last week, making the wildlife viewing that much more appealing. According to organizer Michael O’Dell with the City of Holbrook, the tires were encased in hard-packed dirt that has to be removed before they could be taken out. The volunteers had around 100 tires done in just about two hours. Blue Heron Lake is the new official name for the lake which, according to O’Dell, has become a very popular birding attraction. “There is something called an eBird App where birders document how many species they see each time they come out. For several years now the Hidden Cove area has been number one in Navajo County for species observed,” stated O’Dell. He noted that removing the tires now makes it a much nicer back drop for the photos that are being taken there and uploaded to the app. “We get many people coming to see the Petroglyphs at Hidden Cove, but the birding and wildlife viewing is starting to draw just as many visitors. It is one of the only wildlife preserves for miles around. It has been so gratifying to take part in protecting the wildlife there and see so many species, like the birds, thriving now.”
