By Greg Perkins Joseph City’s boys team is off to a 1-2 mark after the first week of the season. They opened the season last week in impressive fashion with a 74-10 road win over Seligman. Jay Edwards put in a dominating performance with 24 points, and eight boards. Bryce Bushman and Tyler Penrod each added nine; Karter Lampsa netted 8; Avery Buckley, 7; Bannon Johnson, 6; Jeyrell Billie, 3; and Jareon Miller, DJ Beatty and Travis Wilson each chipped in with two points. Head Coach Eric Miller’s unit was on the other side of the ledger on Friday, suffering a 77-40 road loss at St. Johns. The Redskins jumped on top of the Wildcats early, outscoring them 28-4 in the first stanza. St. Johns continued to shoot well in the second, tacking on another 24 points to lead by 30 points at the break. Joseph City played a little better in the second half, but the damage was already done. Buckley led the Cats in scoring with 12. Johnston helped with 9, all of them coming from the three-point line; Edwards had 8 points and 10 boards; Lampsa, 6; Bryce Bushman 4, and Penrod finished with a single point. Hosting North Valley Christian Academy on Saturday, the Wildcats played all right on offense but defensively, they couldn’t contain the Lions who scorched the nets for 97 points handing the Wildcats a 97-50 home court loss. The visiting Lions led 22-8 after the first period but in the second quarter they netted 37 points, opening up a 59-19 half time lead. Joseph City scored well in the fourth with a 23-point output but it wasn’t near enough. Edwards dropped in 25 to go with 11 rebounds. Lampsa added 10; Johnston, 5; Jeyrell Billie, 3; Penrod, 3; Beatty, 2; and Blake Palmer scored two points. Joseph City will take their 1-2 record into this week’s two games. After hosting Mogollon on Tuesday, the Wildcats will welcome in Ash Fork on Wednesday. Next Tuesday they travel to St. Michaels, then will host that same Cardinal team again on the fourth.
