By China Cassidy At approximately 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, the Holbrook Volunteer Fire Department (HVFD) was dispatched to a vacant warehouse fire in the 800 block of Navajo Blvd. behind Route 66 Lumber. HVFD Chief Alex Baker said that firefighters were able to contain and extinguish the fire without any problems but because it was an empty building, he is unsure of how the fire was started. “It was an unoccupied building and we don’t really know what caused the fire, because there wasn’t much inside the building itself,” stated Baker. He said that the building attached to the west side of the property also sustained some fire damage but they extinguished that one first to ensure that the fire would not spread beyond that, causing more damage to the remaining buildings on the lot. Baker explained that because the building was old and there were no occupants, the best course of action was to let it continue to burn the remainder of the structure and then extinguish. “Once we got there and determined that there was nobody in there (and) the police department had done a good job of getting everyone away and quartering-off the area, we made that determination instead of putting somebody in danger by trying to put them inside to try to put it out.” The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
