Baseball 3 Snowflake

The Lobos are having a tough time in the early going of this season. The Lobos dropped their first two games at the end of February by a combined total of five runs. With the calendar turning to March, things only got worse for Snowflake when they fell at home to Safford on Tuesday of last week in six innings.

Safford took the early lead with three runs in the first. Snowflake countered with a lone run in the home half of the frame but that would be their only run the rest of the way. The Bulldogs added one more in the second, but pushed in three in the fifth and put the game away with six runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Snowflake scattered five hits led by Devin Hiller who went two for three; Jace LeSueur, one for two; Brevin Matthews, one for three; Caden Cantrell, one for three, with a RBI; and Ricky Munger went zero for two, stole a base and scored the team’s only run.

Cantrell worked five innings on the hill giving up seven runs, with six strikeouts and walked three. Garrett Wood pitched one frame allowing six runs, with two strikeouts and walked one Bulldog batter.

Snowflake played in the Kingman Invitational Tournament over the weekend and did pick up their first three wins of the season. After opening the tournament on Thursday with a 5-8 loss to Spring Creek, Nev., the Lobos bounced back with an 8-6 win over Wickenburg later in the day. Snowflake played just once Friday with a 2-3 loss to Lake Havasu but again came back strong with an 11-8 win over Bagdad on Saturday morning. Their final game of the tournament was Saturday afternoon and resulted in a 6-1 win over Needles, Calif.

After hosting Florence on Tuesday, the team will host Window Rock on Friday. They will then have 11 days off for spring break. The team will return to action on March 24 when they play at Chinle.

Snowflake was 0-3 in regular season games heading into this week.
