With the calendar turning to March, area high school sports are leaving the gyms and heading back outside for the Spring sports seasons.
Snowflake’s softball team already has logged one game in the books. Head Coach Aaron Huish has his club off to a good start as they look to return to last year’s form. Last season the Lady Lobos finished the season as the 3A state runner-up, losing to Sabino in the title game.
This year’s team currently includes seniors Taryn Flake, Sidney Bryant, Heather Whipple and Emma Clonts; juniors Anna Berger, Taylee Craner and Anastatsia Silverhorn; sophomores Kimberlee Eich and Aubrey Clonts; and freshmen Maren Berger and Braedyn Standerfer.
Snowflake opened the season on Wednesday last week with a 4-1 home field win over Fountain Hills. The Lobos broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third, then added single runs in each the fifth and sixth innings.
Pitching sensation Berger only needed two runs to secure the win. The junior worked all seven innings in the circle allowing just one run on three hits, with 14 strikeouts and only one walk.
Snowflake collected six hits with Flake going two for two, with a double and a triple. Berger was also two for two. Heather Whipple was one for one, with a double and Emma Clonts went one for three.
After hosting Safford on Tuesday of this week, the team will welcome in Window Rock on Friday. Next Tuesday they travel to Florence.
