With the basketball season now in the books, it’s time for Roadrunner fans to venture outside for the softball and baseball seasons, which get underway this week. Both programs will be looking to improve on last year’s records.
Last season the Lady Roadrunners went 7-21 overall and 3-15 in regular season games. This season Head Coach Scott Baker will be counting on returning players Jyllian Hall, Jelena Despain, Aubrianna Begay, Olivia Richins, Ashley Spears, Holly Hill, Tiffani Tyler, Madison Chappell and Gabrielle Tyler to help lead the team to an improved season.
After opening the season on Tuesday at Chino Valley, Holbrook will have a week off to prepare for their East Region opener at Show Low next Tuesday. Next Thursday they will once again be on the road at St. Johns. Holbrook’s first home game will be on March 16 when they host Ganado.
Kendall Bakurza will once again head up the Roadrunner baseball team. Like the softball team, the baseball squad will be looking for an improvement over last season’s 2-24 overall record.
This year’s baseball roster is quite young and includes seniors Adrian Aguilera and Gabriel Baker; juniors Jaggar Buckley, Xan Alsenay, Jesse Knight, Corey Zalenski, Zachary Pete, John O’Brien and Jacob Yazzie; sophomores are Destin Baur, Carson Hatch and Manuel Baca; freshmen on the team will be Marcus Oberriter, Daniel Montijo, Isaac Martinez and Izzy Ramos.
Like the softball team, the Roadrunners will have opened their season on Tuesday with a trip to Chino Valley. On Thursday they will play at St. Johns. Holbrook’s first home game of the season will be a double header contest with Chinle on Saturday. Next Tuesday the team will open East Region play with a game at Show Low.
