Despite not playing on Friday in the final day of the regular season, the Lady Roadrunners moved up one spot in the final 3A power rankings and will head to the State tournament as the No. 10 overall seed. Holbrook will have hosted Fountain Hills on Tuesday night at Munoz Gym. The 10th ranked Lady Birds and the 23rd ranked Lady Falcons faced each other in Fountain Hills just two weeks ago with Holbrook coming out on top. Barring an upset on Tuesday the Lady Roadrunners will be on the road on Friday with a trip to Window Rock to face the seventh seeded Lady Scouts. The road doesn’t get any easier from there. If Holbrook can upset Window Rock they would most likely meet up with No. 2 Page in Prescott on Monday, in what would be a rematch of last year’s state championship game. “We certainly have a tough bracket to deal with, but must take things one game at a time. Our half of the bracket is loaded with powerful north region teams, but when we play well we can compete. We gained a lot of state tournament experience last season and will have to draw on that to help us advance in the bracket,” stated Coach Greg Perkins. Holbrook won their regular season finale on Thursday night with a 49-37 road win over Show Low. Playing the game at Mogollon High School, Holbrook opened up a 13-6 first period lead then led by six at the half. A strong defensive third period limited the Cougars to just two points helping Holbrook pull away and secure the 12-point win. Matehya Aberle led the team in scoring with 17 points. Madison Chappell added her 10th double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Sam Billie netted a pair of three’s for six points, Talynn Spencer and Terry Nez each had five, and Shan Footracer finished with two points. Holbrook made seven of 11 free throws and hit four three-point buckets. The Cougars were led by Hannah Barclay with 9 points. They made two of four free throws and hit three treys. With that win, Holbrook concluded the regular season with an overall record of 23-6. They went 14-5 in power point contests and the team was 10-0 in east region play claiming their fourth consecutive east region crown. Holbrook is joined in the 3A state bracket by four other east region teams. Winslow is seeded ninth and will have hosted No. 24 Wickenburg on Tuesday. No. 13 Snowflake will have hosted No. 20 Gilbert Christian. No. 19 Blue Ridge will travel to face No. 14 AlA Queen Creek and No. 17 Show Low will be in the city to face No. 16 Valley Christian. As usual the north region dominated the final seedings with five of the eight first round byes going to Page, Ganado, Tuba City, Window Rock and Chinle.
