Holbrook and Winslow met for the second time this season on Feb. 4, this time in front of a capacity crowd in Winslow. Holbrook won the first meeting and they backed that win up with a more impressive road win on Tuesday night. Following Desirae Bain’s opening three-point field goal on Holbrook’s first offensive possession, both teams struggled to score through the first eight minutes, with Holbrook on top 9-6. In the second, Holbrook’s defense and transition offense piled up 18 points with Bain connecting twice more from distance and Terry Nez scoring seven in the period. Madison Chappell’s three-point field goal helped propel Holbrook to a 12-point halftime lead. Holbrook got three-point field goals from Alyssa Yazzie, Bain and Terry Nez in the third, along with four points from Matehya Aberle helping the Birds build a 42-28 lead going into the fourth quarter. In the final stanza, Holbrook again played well on defense, limiting the Bulldogs to just six points while Talynn Nez scored four and Aberle made three of four three throws helping Holbrook secure the 52-34 road win. “This was a big win for us. We felt like after our first win the pressure would be on them to protect their home floor. I think we played a little more relaxed than they did especially from the second quarter on. Dez’s shots really sparked us and Terry came off the bench and did an outstanding job. Also Talynn was able to handle their press and everyone joined Madison in playing great defense. They did a good job on Matehya but she kept working through her game and had a solid second half. Overall this was a good team win. Super proud of my girls for winning at Winslow,” stated Coach Greg Perkins. The Bulldogs were paced by Oriah Barton-Paddock and Andrea Willeto with 8 each. Kristen Wagner added 7; Sierra Singer, 6; Brianna Little, 3; and Kyle Begay scored two. The home team made six of 14 free throws and hit two long-range shots. Holbrook was led by Bain’s 14-point effort. Terry Nez and Aberle both added 11; Chappell, 7; Talynn Spencer finished with 6; Alyssa Yazzie had 3. Holbrook made 11 of 17 free throws and hit seven treys. With the loss the 10th ranked Bulldogs dropped to 16-9 overall and they are now 10-6 in regular season games. The 14th ranked Holbrook team improved to 20-6 on the season and they are now 11-5 in regular season contests.
