The ninth ranked Roadrunners and fifth ranked Bulldogs put on a show for a packed house at Don Petronavich Gym on Feb. 4. Winslow built a 10-point lead in the first half, then led by as much as 14 in the third before Holbrook came roaring back to eventually win the game 66-63 in overtime.

Kobi Koerperich had a huge night dropping 32 points on the Bulldogs. He started the attack with seven of Holbrook’s first quarter 14 points. In the second, the Birds were cold from the field getting just one three-point field goal from Anthony Nelson and five free throws leaving them down 10 at the break.

Winslow was paced by Dustin Richard with 12 first half points and Zachary Wagner added 11 through the first two quarters. Winslow quickly took a 14-point lead early in the third, before Holbrook started their rally. Koerperich drained a three then added four more in the frame. Eric Baldonado went to the bucket for seven in the period as Holbrook trimmed the Bulldog lead to two points by the end of the quarter.

The Bulldogs moved ahead by five points midway through the fourth but another Roadrunner rally capped by a long-range trey from Koerperich put the Birds on top at 48-47, sending the large Holbrook fan base into a frenzy.

Down the stretch Holbrook found themselves trailing by two when Damien Clark was fouled with less that 10 seconds left in regulation. The junior guard calmly stepped to the line making both free throws sending the game to overtime.

In the extra session Winslow scored first but Holbrook fought back taking a two-point lead. Holbrook’s Nick Begay had two huge offensive rebounds late in the game to help secure the three-point road win for Holbrook and avenge Winslow’s win in Holbrook a couple of weeks ago.

Along with Koerperich’s huge scoring night with 32, Baldonado added 14; Nelson, 10; Clark, 5; Brandon Tapaha 3; and Begay had 2. Holbrook made 22 of 29 charity tosses and hit six big three-point shots.

Winslow was paced by Wagner with a 26-point effort. Dustin Richard added 19; Tyrell Young, 7; Josiah Montgomery, 5; Zane Corum, 4; and Ray Billups added 2. The Bulldogs made 12 of 20 free throws and hit five three-point shots.

With the loss Winslow falls to 20-7 overall and they are now 12-4 in regular season contests. Holbrook’s win advanced them to 11-5 in regular season games and they are now 18-8 overall.

Holbrook will host Snowflake on Friday night. Winslow is slated to host Blue Ridge on Friday night.
