Snowflake’s Lady Lobos are off to an impressive beginning to the 2019-2020 basketball season. Joseph Clare’s team wrapped up a successful run at the Phoenix Christian Holiday Hoops tournament going 4-1 in their five games.
They picked up their regular season opening win on Dec. 3 with a hard fought 34-33 home court win over Ganado. In that contest, the Lobos got a balanced attack with seven players scoring despite the low final score. Emily Davis led the way with 8, Kamri Ballard, Macee Papa and Taryn Flake each had 5, Trysten Hancock and Heather Whipple both had 4 and Austin Stratton finished with 3. Snowflake struggled with 34 turnovers, but played great defense on the other end to make up for it.
Throughout the five tournament games they played stellar defense. The Lobos held two opponents under 10 total points, two more under 20 and only gave up 31 points in their lone loss.
They opened the tournament vs Alhambra on Friday evening defeating the Lions 31-8. Marynda Caldwell and Ballard each led with 8. Papa added four and Hannah Nichols helped with 3.
Later that night they cruised to a 52-8 win over Basis (Phoenix). Davis, Ballard and Papa each netted 10 points. Hancock added 6 in the big win.
Saturday morning the Lobos took care of Northwest Christian with a 30-14 win. Papa led the team in scoring with 10. Flake added 6 and Nichols helped with 4.
Saturday afternoon Snowflake handled Fairfax 36-19. Then their final tournament came later that afternoon and brought with it their only tournament loss when they fell to Cactus 31-28.
This week the Lobos will have hosted Safford on Tuesday, then they will have a week off to prepare for a long trip to face the Gophers in Florence next Tuesday. They will play at Valley Sanders on Dec. 19, then host Page on the 21st.
Snowflake entered this week with an overall record of 5-1.
