It’s been a long while since Holbrook’s football team held any type of lead against Blue Ridge. On Friday night after the first offensive play of the game the Birds found themselves on top of the Yellowjackets 6-0 following a 70-yard half back option pass from Tyson Begay to Marcus Oberriter.

Blue Ridge didn’t take long to counter with quarterback PJ London moving the team down field in two plays. Damon Mitchell’s one-yard run tied the game and London’s point after kick put the Jackets on top for good at 7-6. Following a second Blue Ridge score, which made the score 14-6, Holbrook had a chance to tie the game.

A 23-yard touchdown pass from Oberriter to Tyson Begay in the right corner of the endzone made the score 14-12 with 2:15 left in the first quarter. Holbrook’s two-point attempt would have knotted the game, but the play was short.

In the second Blue Ridge, which came into the game ranked fifth in the most recent power rankings, began to pull away. A pair of London touchdown passes and a six-yard scoring run by Mitchel made the score 34-12 at the half.

Blue Ridge scored three more times in the third period pushing the lead to 55-12 before Holbrook came back to life. Oberriter connected for the second time with Tyson Begay, this time from 14 yards out giving Holbrook 18 points. With 3:18 left in the game John O’Brien scored on a one-yard plunge and a successful two-point play made the margin 55-24.

Blue Ridge, returned the ensuing kick-off 85 yards for a score posting their 62nd point with the point after kick. Holbrook scored their final points of the night on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Oberriter to Tyrell Yazzie. Obrien’s two-yard conversion made the final score 62-32.

For Holbrook, the loss isn’t as important as the 32 points they were able to put on the board. Holbrook found some success early in the game and they were able to carry it over into the second half. Holbrook had scored just 32 total points in their past five games. To put that many on the board against the fifth ranked team, even though some were backup players shows how this Holbrook team has improved this season.
