Week four of the high school football season has already arrived and through the first weeks of the season some things are beginning to take shape for area teams.

Holbrook is struggling to win games but has still shown an improvement from previous years in most areas other than the win column. Joseph City started the season on a down note but has bounced back with two wins. Snowflake was briefly sitting with a .500 record but has quickly regrouped with back to back shut out wins to move to 3-1. Winslow opened the season with a road loss at Blue Ridge but has rebounded nicely with three consecutive wins all over 3A North region opponents.

This week the Roadrunners will be playing on Saturday evening in Queen Creek at the Arizona Leadership Academy -Ironwood Campus. Like last year, they will meet up with Sahuarita at this field. Last season the Mustangs dominated this game played in 103-degree heat. That game did have a 5 p.m. kickoff, while Saturday’s game won’t start until 6 p.m., which may help lower the heat index a little.

This season Sahuarita is 1-2 on the season. They were soundly beaten by both Santa Cruz Valley and Coolidge just last week. Their lone win was a strong performance over Pale Verde in Tucson. Despite their overall record the Mustangs will still have a good team. Santa Cruz and Coolidge are a combined 7-1 this year, which is a much better overall record that Holbrook’s first three opponents can show. With Holbrook’s young team still learning and the Mustangs being a competitive team, the Roadrunners could be in for another long night. Despite that, they need to stay consistent with how Coach Starkey and his staff are approaching things and as stated before it will take time before the results will show themselves in the win/loss column.

Snowflake will host a team from Tucson on Friday night when they take on the Pusch Ridge Lions. The Lobos have pitched back to back shut outs with big wins over Florence and Page. Pusch Ridge won their first game but has been shut out in their past two outings. With the Lions having to travel up from Tucson to play in Snowflake the edge has to go to the Lobos to improve to 4-1 and the Lions may be looking at a third consecutive shut-out loss.

Winslow has enjoyed beating up on three straight North Region opponents but this week they will host Tanque Verde. The Hawks are 0-3 on the season, and will be traveling up from Tucson. Tanque Verde has struggled to score in their three losses managing just a total of four touchdowns over three games. Winslow won this game last year in Tucson 40-0. This might be a similar score this week as the Bulldogs look to improve to 4-1.

Joseph City sits at 2-1 on the season riding a two-game winning streak. Friday’s game at Williams will be a tough hurdle for them to make it three in a row. The Vikings are 3-1 on the season and in all three of their wins they have scored at least 50 points. Their only loss was to Pahranagat Valley from Nevada in week two by a single touchdown.

Williams and Joseph City have one common opponent this year and the results don’t bode well for the Wildcats. Joseph City lost to Bagdad by a large margin and Williams defeated Bagdad last week by 46 points. That doesn’t equate to a good night for Wildcat fans.
