On July 9, the Holbrook City Council meeting was called to order by Mayor Merrill Young followed by a public hearing on a resolution amending the water adjudication fee. Mayor Young opened the hearing and noted that there were no members of the public there to speak.

The council had voted in February to add a $5 water adjudication fee for users of the city water and sewer systems to offset the increased legal costs of the water adjudication litigation involving the Little Colorado River water rights. Last month City Manager Ted Soltis informed the council that after a review the funds that would be generated from that rate, the money collected would not be enough to cover the costs.

As a result, this resolution was presented to the council that would increase that rate from $5 to $8. Following the hearing the resolution was unanimously approved by the council.

Taking into consideration that the fire happened more than a year ago, Soltis stated that a letter requesting the property be cleaned up has been sent to the owners of the Magnuson Hotel on Hopi Drive. A deadline of Aug. 8, was given but Soltis said the city has not yet received a response.

Soltis shared a comment he received from an unnamed citizen who attends the display from out of town who said, “What you do in Holbrook for the benefit of citizens and others who come from miles away is fantastic.”
