Hosting highly ranked Payson on Tuesday afternoon the Roadrunners fell behind early but put on a furious rally over the final three and a half innings before coming up two runs short in a 9-7 loss.

Payson entered the game ranked third in power points, while the Lady Roadrunners were in the 28th position. The Longhorns showed their talents early posting three first inning runs. Their pitcher Raci Miranda showed power and control at the plate holding Holbrook scoreless through the first three frames.

With Payson leading 9-0 after batting in the top of the fourth inning, it appeared Holbrook was headed for a 10-run rule game. Jovon Boling quickly changed that with a solo blast in the bottom of the fourth. Holbrook put two more on base in the inning but came away with just the one score.

However, that hit sparked Holbrook’s bats. The ladies scored two more in the fifth, then pulled even closer with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Payson finished things off in the seventh to preserve the win.

Holbrook had five players go two for four at the plate: Jelena Despain, Hailey Guttery, Canela Queiruga, Madison Chappell and Jovon Boling, each had two hits. Despain and Guttery both had one double. Jyllian Hall went one for four, as did Gabrielle Tyler.

Holbrook left 16 batters on base, and just a couple more timely hits could have produced a much needed win, which could move them into the top 24 in the standings making them eligible for the state play-in game. Terryuna Nez stole one base for Holbrook.

Tiffani Tyler again worked in the circle giving up nine runs, all earned, on 13 hits with one strikeout and walked two.

Payson’s pitcher countered by giving up seven runs, only one earned, with 11 strikeouts and walked one.

With the loss Holbrook dropped to 3-10 on the season.
