According to Superintendent Dr. Robbie Koerperich AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a program centered upon helping students become college and career ready. “AVID builds a school-wide philosophy around learning techniques, student organization skills and building relationships between students, teachers and parents to help every student acquire the skills necessary for college and career readiness. We have chosen to start this at HJHS as a pathway to high school readiness. The AVID program will involve school-wide professional development, common instructional strategies implemented in all classrooms and a focus on student-centered readiness skills.”

In addition, the district will continue to analyze student performance measured by graduation rates, performance on state assessments, benchmark assessments and the newly developed state-wide college and career readiness index to ensure each Roadrunner is on a path to success.

“HUSD is committed to providing student readiness beyond high school graduation. HUSD offers dual enrollment classes through Northland Pioneer College, Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses like welding, business, early childhood development, automotive and several other career readiness programs. In addition, HUSD will continue to provide a full range of services to help each unique student develop,” stated Koerperich.

The district does not have any major capital improvement plans on the docket for the coming year. According to Koerperich, smaller projects will include a bathroom remodel at the Munoz Gym to provide better restroom and locker room access for events at the gym. The district is also updating camera systems for better surveillance for school security and developing plans for a possible remodel of the HHS library for a student union type environment to include a small cafe station, computer access and a study area for students throughout the day. “In addition, we will continue our efforts for beautification on all campuses including a focus on improving our fields, playgrounds and overall campuses.”

Finally, the district will be analyzing building space due to decreased enrollment. “We will be analyzing our square footage to ensure we are maximizing our space throughout all the school buildings to maximize heating, cooling and cleaning costs associated with school operations. This will be an ongoing process throughout the next year to determine where and how we can maximize the space available at each site,” he stated.

In conclusion, Koerperich stated, “HUSD is committed to becoming the school district we are capable of becoming. HUSD is a special place to educate kids and we want to continue the tradition of Helping our Unique Students Develop.”
