The Lady Roadrunners used an efficient first half shooting percentage to open up a 17-point halftime lead over visiting Window Rock on Nov. 27. The second half they played even with the Scouts resulting in a 59-41 Holbrook win. Madison Chappell netted six in the first stanza helping Holbrook jump out to a 15-6 lead after the first eight minutes. In the second, Holbrook found the range from long distance with Megan Cummings hitting a trio of treys, along with Desirae Bain and Mika Joe who each had one. Holbrook’s outside shooting allowed them to double up the Scouts at the half 34-17. Matehya Aberle took over in the third period, scoring nine of her team high 17 points in that period. Holbrook pushed their margin to 28 points at one time late in the third. In the fourth, Window Rock made a bit of a run but the Roadrunner lead was safe throughout leaving Holbrook with a 2-0 beginning to the young season. “I think we improved over our first game, which is a goal. We know we have a young team and we want to show improvement every game. Obviously when we can shoot the ball well from the perimeter it opens things up in the paint. Megan, Madison and Matehya all played much better than in our first game. It was good to see Mika step up her game as well. Defensively we were aided by the fact that Window Rock was playing their first game. They have a young team as well this year with a couple of outstanding returning players. I know when we see them again right before Christmas they will be a completely different team. “It is good to start off 2-0, but we know we will have struggles ahead. We just need to keep showing improvement, work on our defense, and continue to support each other,” stated Roadrunner Coach Greg Perkins. Aberle led Holbrook with 17 points, 13 of which came in the second half. Cummings and Chappell each netted 14, Joe added 6, Tyleashia Yazzie and Bain both had 3, and Terry Nez helped with two. Holbrook hit seven three-point shots and went just four for 10 at the charity stripe. Window Rock was led by Asia James with 12 points. Shinezba Teller added 10. The Scouts made two three-point field goals and hit one of their two free throw attempts. Holbrook traveled to Chinle on Friday, then hosted Ganado on Tuesday (Dec. 4).
