In a major upset the City of Holbrook has elected a new mayor and a new councilman to replace Mayor Bobby Tyler and Councilman CJ Wischmann in the recall election held Nov. 6. The recall began in response to allegations of unprofessional, unethical and vindictive behavior made by former city employee Kathleen Smith and received enough support from the community to go to the ballot.
According to the unofficial ballot count, former Holbrook councilman Phil Cobb won the mayoral seat with 695 votes, 60.3 percent, over Tyler who garnered 458 votes, which was 39.7 percent of the votes. Mike Nilsson claimed the council seat with 740 votes, 62.2 percent over Wischmann, who garnered 449, or 37.8 percent of the votes.
According to Interim City Manager Cher Reyes, the council will have to canvass the votes not less than six days after the election and no more than 20 days. After the canvass the candidates can be sworn in. It is likely that a special meeting will be for the canvass as the next meeting of the council is on Nov. 13. The remaining terms for both seats are until May of 2019.
