A metal box found half buried behind the Maverik convenience store in Holbrook held a treasure for one area family. The box was turned into the Holbrook Police Department last week and posted on social media in order to determine if the items belonged to a family still in the area.
In the box were documents dating back to 1918, including a Masonic Lodge medallion from Wisconsin, a work badge for Ethel Shepard Stilwell and a library certificate, among other items.
The post on social media was shared 90 times when a relative of the Stilwell saw the post and responded. The items were retrieved by Alivia Wrasse Matkin, Stilwell’s great-great-granddaughter who lives in Show Low. Although the family lived in Holbrook for a short period of time, it is still uncertain how the box became buried in the lot.
